Jaime (Helen Hunt) y Paul Buchman (Paul Reiser), dos neoyorquinos recién casados, tratan de establecer una reglas de convivencia en su apartamento de Manhattan. Se conocen desde hace unos cinco meses y la relación entre ellos no resulta muy fácil , pues ambos son bastante neuróticos, aunque cada uno a su manera.
