Kimihiro Watanuki puede ver espíritus y otras criaturas sobrenaturales variadas, lo cual es una habilidad bastante molesta que no le gusta. En el camino a casa un día, mientras está plagado de espíritus, inexplicablemente se ve obligado a entrar en una casa extraña. Allí, se encuentra con Yuuko, una misteriosa mujer que dice ser capaz de librarlo de la capacidad de ver y atraer a las criaturas problemáticas, por un precio. Ella exige que él trabaje en su «tienda» que otorga deseos a las personas, y así comienza las aventuras de Watanuki a través de eventos extraños y maravillosos.
