Natsume es un chico que ha tenido una vida difícil desde pequeño, puesto que puede ver espíritus llamados Youkai, un buen día algunos de esos espíritus empiezan a atacarle pidiéndole "El Libro de los Amigos" éste libro, es un diario que le dejó su abuela Reiko que también podía ver los espíritus perfectamente. Ésta fue quien encerró el nombre de muchos de los Youkai, impidiendo así que pudiesen ser libres. Natsume, junto con su amigo y guardaespaldas, decidirá ayudar a los Youkai y liberarlos devolviéndoles su nombre.
